America's Cup - the greatest non-war Pissing Contest

The recent decison in NYS (US) court appears to be a victory for both the America's Cup Deed of Gift (DoG) and the multihull community.

The DoG is specific: Challenger will advise its boat and the defender will respond - and true to form GGYC has adopted a formula (multihull) that it used when they received a 'preposterous' (broke the comfortable mold) challenge from 'the land down under' some years back.

What a wonderful opportunity to break with the technology of the past (monohulls), keep the spirit of the original Deed of Gift, side-step the 'pissing contest' and get on with the sport of racing.

Even if the participants can't develop an equitable procedure for dealing with additional challengers the races in Valencia in 2009 should prove to be very exciting given the acceleration capabilities of multihulls and their astonishing (vs monohulls) speeds. The whole world is speeding up and sailing has a wonderful opportunity to keep pace.

Thank you George Schuyler for your wisdom.
